Limescale is the silent enemy of espresso pressure in Quebec. Adopt the right care routine to preserve your machine's longevity.
Regional Analysis
Limescale & water hardness in Quebec.
Depending on your local water grid (Joliette, Montreal, Laurentians, or South Shore), calcium and magnesium ion concentrations vary significantly.
80 to 140 ppm CaCO3
Municipal tap water contains beneficial extraction minerals that bond into white scale crust on thermoblock heating elements once water exceeds 60°C. In-tank filter mandatory!
180 to 300+ ppm CaCO3
Without an ion-exchange water softening cartridge in your tank, internal line diameter narrows by 50% in under 6 months, causing severe brew pressure drops.
Maintenance Schedule
The 4-frequency care routine.
Steam Purge & Damp Wipe
Blow steam for 2 seconds after every milk texturing to eject milk protein deposits inside the wand. Wipe the exterior wand immediately with a clean damp cloth.
Group Head Backflush
On manual machines, perform a water backflush using a blind filter basket and brush the shower screen to dissolve trapped grounds from group gaskets.
Coffee Oil Degreasing
Use a certified degreasing cleaning tablet in the blind filter or bypass chute to dissolve rancid oxidized coffee oils accumulated in 3-way solenoid valves.
Certified Descaling
Run automatic descaling programs using citric and maleic acid-based biodegradable solutions approved by manufacturers.
Why you must NEVER use white vinegar!
Household white vinegar contains aggressive acetic acid. Unlike citric or maleic acid in professional descalers:
- ❌ Acetic acid strips protective aluminum layers in thermoblocks and corrodes brass boilers.
- ❌ It dries out and cracks synthetic silicone O-rings, causing catastrophic internal water leaks.
- ❌ Its harsh lingering smell permeates water lines, ruining the taste of your next 50 coffee shots.
Automatic milk system hygiene.
Milk fats and proteins rapidly solidify inside suction tubes and frothing chambers (LatteCrema or OneTouch systems). Use a liquid milk system cleaner (Milk Clean) weekly to dissolve dried lactic acid deposits.
